Those who seem to always have a melody running through their mind and soul are ideal candidates to learn how to play the piano. While playing music is fun, piano students and their teachers need to learn some valuable tips on making the most out of their piano lessons that begin with taking your lessons seriously.
Set Goals You're Excited About
It is important to set goals that you're truly excited about. Both long- and short-term goals should be set relevant to each student's age, playing proficiency and time available to practice and play. These goals should be challenging but realistic. Try setting a long-term goal of mastering a piano piece well. If you have an upcoming performance or recital, use that as your time frame. To stay motivated, set weekly or monthly goals to study and learn and practice specific sections. Keep these goals fun and reward yourself whenever a goal is met.
Write Things Down
Just like schoolwork or job training, it helps tremendously to write important things down that your teacher or trainer says. This helps by giving the student something to refer to later at home. Incorporating several types of senses into your learning process also helps students fully absorb the material and retain lessons longer. You don't have to keep an entire notebook with you but bring some smaller school supplies like index flash cards to be able to write down important notes or advice your teacher has for you.
Keep a bag ready with all your things in a convenient location ready to grab will help you if you need to leave for your lessons in a hurry. This ensures that the information is close at hand to review during quiet moments or to jot down questions that you want to ask your piano teacher at your next lesson.
Study Music You Love and Practice, Practice, Practice
To play better, make sure to pay attention during lessons, study the lesson material such as the sheet music, then practice, practice and practice again. Your instructor can only do so much; it's still up to you to do your part. Studying the styles of music and the work of musical artists that you already love keeps things fun and can be highly motivational.
The small effort of jotting down notes during, just after and in preparation for your lessons will pay off immensely. Taking your lessons seriously can also help you improve how well you play.
