"The Star-Spangled Banner" is the national song of the United States of America. The words come from a poem written a long time ago—on September 13, 1814—by a man named Francis Scott Key. He wrote it after watching a big battle at Fort McHenry, where British ships were attacking. When the battle was over, Francis saw the huge American flag still flying proudly, and that inspired him to write the famous song we know today.
