Numerous research studies show that learning to play the piano may help students improve their academic performance. Even if students never master great piano concertos like Mozart's Piano Concerto No 27 or Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No 1, learning to play the piano may help benefit students in many different ways when it comes to achieving top marks in school.

Engages Both Sides of the Brain

Playing the piano has been shown to help students relieve stress. Playing the piano at any level takes full concentration and engages all areas of the brain. When one is concentrating on playing a difficult passage, the left side of the brain is involved. On the other hand, the right side of the brain becomes engaged when someone merely practices pieces that they have already mastered. This helps develop both sides of the brain and can improve memory when your children go to class.

Increased Reading Comprehension

Research shows that there is a positive correlation between playing the piano and reading comprehension. There are common perceptual concepts common in both reading aloud and playing music. Furthermore, the research suggests that both require the student to pay attention to specific details. And of course, if your child is reading better, they are going to have an easier time in class and be able to keep high grades.

Improved Listening Skills

Listening and analytical skills are crucial to learning to play the piano. Students who play the piano must learn to listen carefully to many different elements of music including pitch, rhythm, and volume. They can then apply these same listening skills to the teacher in the classroom. Some studies specifically show that the piano player's ability to match pitch when playing helps them learn to recognize new words better because they can hear the intricate pitch of different words better than non-players.

Enhanced Writing Skills

Music can improve a student's language skills. They say that learning the rules of how a piece of music flows together can help students conquer complex grammar skills. In turn, students often get better scores on written assignments raising their grades.

The piano is a beautiful instrument with a lot of history and amazing compositions. Just that in itself is a reason to learn how to play. But with learning music and music composition comes a lot of benefits and advantages that will help your children grow to be successful in life (though there certainly are other ways to improve a student’s GPA). If your child happens to like playing the piano and other musical instruments, be sure to encourage them! There’s a lot of benefits to it.
