Plasticity in adults
Music training causes significant changes in brain structure with children. Adult training also causes permanent changes in brain structure, but to a lesser degree that children. However in older ages these changes can be made in weeks of practice. Changes in brain function can be observed even within three hours of training, but without continued training, short-term changes are reversible. Playing an instrument is highly complex using different higher order cognitive functions where changes can occur in days, weeks and years.
Elderly Plasticity
“Even very old musicians can develop new skills, just as research in 90 year olds showed that weight lifting had definite effects on balance and strength. Very old musicians can continue to perform despite the complex demands on motor, visual and auditory brain functions needed.”
Dr John Leif – Searching For The Mind
The Piano Wizard game and Music Wizard Method are perfectly matched for today’s Active Adults. The game and method allows for individual and group music experiences either at home or in community environments such as senior programs.
A major focus for active adults today is the prevention of a decline in cognitive and physical function. An active, healthy, fun lifestyle may prevent some of this decline. Participation in musical programs can be a major part of this lifestyle. The Piano Wizard and Piano Wizard Academy Tutorial DVD and Songbook lessons offer a fun, easy way to stay mentally and physically active and may keep manual dexterity, cognitive function, visual and visual-spatial function, and auditory skills from declining. As a bonus, singing and dancing may spontaneously occur!
